Silicone potting compound refers to a two-component electronic potting adhesive made of silicone rubber. Silicone potting compounds are generally soft and elastic. There are many types of silicone potting compounds, and different types vary significantly in temperature resistance, waterproof performance, insulation performance, optical properties, adhesion to different materials, and hardness. Functional fillers can be added to silicone potting compounds to impart properties such as electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and magnetic permeability. The mechanical strength of silicone potting compounds is generally relatively low, and it is precisely because of this characteristic that it is "breakable" for easy maintenance—meaning if a component fails, you only need to pry open the potting compound and replace the part with a new one. After repairing the original unit, you can continue using it. The color of silicone potting compounds can generally be customized as needed: transparent, opaque, or colored. Silicone potting compounds perform very well in shock resistance, electrical properties, waterproofing, high and low temperature resistance, and anti-aging performance. Two-component silicone potting compounds are the most common and include condensation-cure and addition-cure types. Generally, the condensation-cure type has poor adhesion to components and the potting cavity, generates volatile low-molecular substances during curing, and exhibits noticeable shrinkage after curing. The addition-cure type (also known as silicone gel) has a very low shrinkage rate and produces no low-molecular byproducts during curing. It can be cured rapidly by heating.
